Workshop 1 description: this two-hour virtual training provides participants with a foundational understanding of sexual behaviors in children and how to distinguish between developmentally typical and problematic behaviors. The training explores common misconceptions about youth with problematic sexual behaviors, as well as the risk and protective factors that influence these behaviors. Participants will also learn practical guidelines and strategies for assessing sexual behavior concerns and gain skills they can apply to support children and families in safe, developmentally appropriate ways.

Workshop 2 description: this two-hour virtual training examines important considerations when supporting children with problematic sexual behaviors in home and placement settings. Participants will learn about factors that influence placement decisions, key components of effective safety planning with families, and strategies that support safe sibling reunification. The training will also highlight characteristics of home environments that promote safety and strengthen protective factors for children. Participants will get a brief summary of the foundational information of children with problematic sexual behaviors, so this training can be attended without any prerequisites.

Presenter’s bio: Andrew Monroe, LCSW, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker at the University of Oklahoma Health Campus (OUHC), Center on Child Abuse and Neglect where he has been employed since 2020. He completed his undergraduate studies at Auburn University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work. He completed his Master of Social Work at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL in 2013. Mr. Monroe has experience working with and developing programs for youth with problematic sexual behaviors as well as trauma survivors in urban and rural communities through telehealth, in home, residential, school, and clinic based services. He is certified in several evidence-based treatment models, including Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Problematic Sexual Behavior Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (PSB-CBT). Mr. Monroe is a lead clinician in the Treatment Program for Children with Problematic Sexual Behavior for school-age children (PSB-S) and Adolescents with Illegal Sexual Behavior Program (PSB-A), and oversees the coordination of all the PSB-S training programs and rural health initiatives for the National Center on the Sexual Behaviors of Youth as the School-Age Training Director. Andrew provides both clinical and senior leader support to teams being trained in the University of Oklahoma Problematic Sexual Behavior – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy™ (PSB-CBT™).

The Juvenile Sex Offender Assessment Protocol II (J-SOAP II) is a checklist developed to aid in the systematic review of risk factors associated with sexual and criminal offending. It is used with boys between 12 and 18 years old who have been adjudicated for sexual offenses and non-adjudicated youths with a history of sexually coercive behavior.

This LIVE training features Sue Righthand, PhD, one of the developers of the
J-SOAP II.

Dr. Righthand brings her extensive knowledge and experience with juvenile sexual risk and needs assessment to you in this interactive eight-hour training. With a content filled schedule over two days, her scientist-practitioner approach to instruction helps ground participants in relevant research while providing hands-on learning experiences in using the J-SOAP II responsibly and effectively.

What it’s about: Successful completion of clinical services is closely associated with caregiver participation in treatment. However, engagement may begin with a challenge: fewer than 50% of families scheduled for therapy services attend their first appointment. Participants of this session will (1) identify protective and other factors that impact engagement in clinical services, (2) understand perceptions of clinical services, the roles systems play in these services, and their relationship to engagement, and (3) discuss research-based strategies to enhance professional and caregiver engagement in clinical services.

Who should attend: Professionals working with military families, educators, service providers, and community advocates who want to deepen their understanding and enhance their ability to support prevention and early intervention. Free CE credits and certificates are available for providers.

This webinar is focused on increasing the knowledge base around problematic sexual behavior in children for all multidisciplinary team members. The National Center on Sexual Behavior of Youth (NCSBY) defines children with problematic sexual behavior (PSB) as youth who engage in behaviors involving sexual body parts that are developmentally inappropriate and/or potentially harmful to self and others (Carpentier, Silovsky, Chaffin, 2005). Consideration will be given to the role that technology plays in increasing youth exposure to sexualized material and the impact of exposure.

Focus is placed on details of the continuum of sexual behaviors, dispelling myths about children with problematic sexual behavior, and instilling hope in treating this population. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of appropriate language to use and feel more competent in encouraging appropriate next steps for treatment and safety planning with families. Evidence-based information regarding family engagement in treatment, through Mary McKay’s work, is incorporated throughout the webinar
